As with any work of fiction, anime is capable of creating totally disgusting and despicable characters, these being the most hated characters in anime! When a work manages to move the viewer so much, to the point of creating a connection between him and his characters, it means that it has fulfilled its role of being well written. Do you have a character you hate deeply?
Whether it's for killing a beloved character, talking screaming, being very cruel or doing horrible things... There are many criteria for a character to be hated by all fans and that's why today we're going to introduce you to the 11 most hated characters in anime, going from the least to the most hated! Let's meet each one of them and what attitudes put them on our list?
Who are the most hated characters in anime?
Asta (Black Clover)
Asta is a combination of all the clichés of the shounen genre, just as its anime - Black Clover - also gathers all the generics of these works (even if it is not a bad anime). Its protagonist is recognized by fans as a young man who wants to become the Magician King, but is completely annoying for not stopping screaming!
His screaming is what makes Asta one of the most hated characters in anime, as this childish and scandalous temperament takes away the patience of most fans. If he were a little more restrained, even if he still had some clichés, it would certainly make the work much better and easier to watch.
Near (Death Note)
The reason Near is so rejected by the Otaku community is actually linked to another character: L. Near entered the anime only with the purpose of replacing investigator L and continuing the persecution against Kira, but it is obvious that this replacement would not please the fans.
L starred in brilliant scenes and stood out for his intellect, so Near joining the plot shows only a regret on the part of the author to have killed one of the main names in the franchise. Near, in fact, was considered by fans to be one of the most hated characters in anime because he was seen as "a cheap copy" and worse than L.
Zenitsu Agatsuma (Demon Slayer)
Okay, Zenitsu is one of the characters on our list that divides opinions and is not unanimous when it comes to being one of the most hated characters in anime. He can be cute and adorable, but his exaggerated side ends up turning him into a fearful and scandalous, causing disgust in some Demon Slayer fans.
When he's asleep or unconscious, he's one of the most powerful characters in the franchise, but when he's awake, he serves as over-the-top comic relief. Zenitsu makes drama out of everything, screams all the time, and cries more often than a demon hunter should.
Envy (Fullmetal Alchemist)
Envy was created to be one of the main antagonists of Fullmetal Alchemist, alongside his other brothers, the Homunculi. Despite being part of a large group, he stood out in the "most hated anime characters" category for being a merciless creature capable of committing cold-blooded murder without remorse.
He killed our dear Hughes, a soldier father of a family and who always appeared in the anime being lovely, kind and proud of his beautiful wife and daughter. Envy not only took Hughes' life, but did so by using his shape-shifting ability to take on the image of Hughes' wife and have him killed by the one he loved the most.
Shingi Ikari (Neon Genesis Evangelion)
Despite being the protagonist of one of the most classic anime of all time, Shinji stands out in absolutely nothing and lacks personality and charisma. Even though he is one of the pilots of the great EVA robots, he ends up being left behind when he is placed next to the other co-protagonists (who end up being more interesting than the boy).
He has no determination, no self-esteem and no courage, which makes him one of the most hated characters in anime because he is always complaining about something and constantly unhappy. People tend to want protagonists who inspire them in some way, which is not the case with Ikari.
Mahito (Jujutsu Kaisen)
Mahito is one of the antagonists of Jujutsu Kaisen, so we already know that he will be despicable because he is a Curse. Mahito is a curse that came from the fear that humans have of other humans, so it is very powerful and has the ability to mold the soul of everything it touches, changing the physical form of anyone.
But what made him one of the most hated characters in anime was his affair with Junpei, a young man who was becoming friends with the protagonist Itadori. Mahito tricked Junpei, manipulated him and, in the end, turned him into a monster just to beg for death for Yuji.
Mineta (My Hero Academia)
Mineta is one of the students of class 1-A of the UA high school of My Hero Academia and the reason for being one of the most hated characters in anime is his extremely invasive way and that sexualizes the female characters of the franchise. Well, he also has one of the most useless powers in My Hero Academia, but the fact that he always makes adult jokes or focuses on female body parts annoys fans.
Mineta was supposed to serve as comic relief, but he ends up just being a pain in the ass. Plus, he's always running away from fights against the League of Villains, hiding or crying when he needs to take hero action. In fact, we don't even know how it was possible for someone like Mineta to pass to such a renowned college as UA.
Danzo (Naruto)
Danzo is certainly one of the most hated characters in the entire Naruto franchise, even competing with villains like Orochimaru and the entire Akatsuki. Danzo was responsible for the extermination of the Uchiha clan, the exile of Itachi - who became a renegade - and the hatred that Sasuke nurtured for his brother over the years. All this just to steal the Sharingans and implant them in his own arm.
He is by far one of the most hated characters in anime for all that despicable resume, but he was also part of one of the most satisfying scenes in Naruto Shippuden: the moment when Sasuke takes revenge and kills him! Danzou's expression fleeing in despair while Sasuke kills him smiling was surely one of the most celebrated moments by fans.
Gabi Braun (Attack on Titan)
Gabi is certainly one of the most hated female characters in Attack on Titan and could not be left out of our list of most hated characters in anime. She is a Marleyan child and, like every Eldian who was born in Marley, her dream is to become an Original Titan carrier to get a better life. However, the brainwashing that the girl suffered was so great that she was able to act against characters loved by fans.
Gabi killed Sasha and was responsible for Eren's transformation into a Founder Titan, as she fired the shot that decapitated the protagonist and exposed his spinal cord. Even with her attempt at redemption, fans haven't forgotten everything she did.
Akainu (One Piece)
The one responsible for the death of one of One Piece's most beloved characters: Portgas D. Ace. Yes, it was Sakazuki who tore a hole in Ace, leaving Luffy desolate for a long time. During the War in Marineford, he decided to execute Ace with his own hands and thus became one of the most hated anime characters of all time.
Not only Ace, but he had also previously fought Kuzan and killed Koby, his own ally. Fans of One Piece - one of the greatest anime of all time - are counting the minutes for Luffy to have his revenge against Akainu.
Shou Tucker (Fullmetal Alchemist)
Shou Tucker is, without a doubt, the top 1 of the most hated characters in anime! What did he do to get that title? Well... He was able to turn his wife and his own daughter into chimeras so as not to lose his title of Federal Alchemist. Yes, out of sheer ambition and greed, the scientist of Fullmetal Alchemist managed to overcome the evil of the villains of the series and won the title of the most despicable being of all.
Not even Edward Elric, the protagonist who was always seen as fair and upright, was able to accept Tucker's existence and his cruelty. This was one of the first times we see Ed and Al harboring a deep anger towards someone and the audience had the same reaction.
Why is Shou Tucker so hated?
Fullmetal Alchemist is a work that manages to criticize real life through the universe full of alchemy, Shou Tucker is a perfect example of this. He ended up being so hated by fans of the franchise not only for his cruelty, but for addressing topics such as scientific experiments using humans as guinea pigs, which causes disgust in the real world.
More than that: the fact that he has the courage to use his wife initially and, years later - in order not to lose his prestigious post - to use his young daughter to raise Chimeras is of an unspeakable cruelty. It is a passage in Fullmetal Alchemist which shows how humans can go too far using science as an excuse, leaving all ethics and moral rulers aside.
