The Perks of Being Invisible (2012)
Based on the book of the same name written by the director of the live action film, The Perks of Being Invisible is one of the films with the most surprising plot twist, although it doesn't directly affect the direction the plot was taking before. The twist discovered near the end is heavy and it's almost impossible not to be touched by the revelation about the protagonist's past.
Here we follow young Charlie (Logan Lerman), who has been suffering from severe depression since the death of his aunt when he was a child. After being hospitalized, the boy enters high school and, despite having a hard time making friends and socializing, ends up getting close to young Sam (Emma Watson) and her half-brother Patrick (Ezra Miller). Things start to change significantly from then on for the protagonist.
Fight Club (1999)
It's impossible to talk about movies with plot twists without thinking of Fight Club, directed by David Fincher. The story adapts the book written by Chuck Palahniuk and is still a reference today when it comes to plot twists that surprise the viewer.
Here we meet a man with psychological problems who is addicted to attending support groups. His life changes considerably when he befriends Tyler (Brad Pitt), a soap salesman who introduces him to an underground wrestling group that they both join. The plot twist in this movie will blow anyone's mind and, even though the movie hints at it during the course of the plot, it's almost impossible to catch it before the climax.
The Sixth Sense (1999)
Another classic among the films with plot twists that are best known and loved by audiences is The Sixth Sense. This title shocked many viewers at the time of its release and continues to be remembered for its totally unexpected twist that is revealed near the end.
In this story we are introduced to a little boy who is disturbed by the fact that he can see dead people very often. He decides to tell his psychologist (Bruce Willis) about it and then the man starts trying to help him however he can without knowing a crucial truth that will change the whole course of the story later on.
Fragmented (2017)
Fragmented is a find among movies with plot twists due to the huge number of twists throughout its plot. But the biggest surprise about it comes at the end, when we discover that this story takes place in the same narrative universe as another movie much loved by the general public.
Kevin (James McAvoy) is a man who suffers from dissociative identity disorder and has around 23 different personalities. He ends up kidnapping three teenagers who are in unimaginable danger in his hands as one of his many personalities proves to be quite ferocious and dangerous, to the point of being called a beast.
Interstellar (2014)
Interstellar is not only one of the most interesting but also most complex films on this list. But it is precisely because of its complexity and also because of the taste it leaves in the viewer's mind for so long that it deserves a place among the best.
In the distant future, Earth has been destroyed by various problems, forcing humans to return to farming as their main means of life. NASA ends up finding other planets with better living conditions than Earth and starts sending missions to retrieve data about them.
It is then that retired astronaut Cooper (Matthew McConaughey) accepts the mission to go into space and try to save humanity. On earth he leaves behind a teenage son and a young daughter who believes she has a ghost in her room.
Run (2017)
Here we have a title that deals with socially important issues through a series of chilling twists. You can't watch this movie without classifying it as one of the best plot twists ever made.
The protagonist here is Chris (Daniel Kaluuya), a black photographer who is nervous about meeting his white girlfriend's family. At first he's welcomed by them and everything goes well, but then he notices macabre details that make everything around him very sinister. Should he run?
Black Swan (2010)
Psychological dramas yield impressive twists and turns and that's what the plot is based on to build what is also one of the best plot twist movies ever made. The story has won several awards and has become a classic of the genre.
The plot follows Nina (Natalie Portman), a ballerina who strives for perfection in her work. She wants to play the lead in Swan Lake, but is threatened by the arrival of another ballerina who is in danger of stealing the role for herself. Nina becomes so obsessed with achieving her goal that reality and hallucinations begin to blur in her mind.
The Skin I Wear (2011)
Released in 2011 and directed by Pedro Almodóvar, The Skin I Wear is one of the most shocking films on this list. The story is heavy enough on its own and when the central twist comes and the viewer is given their answers, astonishment is inevitable.
Here we follow the story of a plastic surgeon who is obsessed with building artificial human skin in the laboratory. His daughter dies after an alleged rape and so he decides to seek revenge through his sinister experiments.
Parasite (2019)
This movie became world-famous after winning the Oscar in 2020, being the first non-English-language title to win the award outside of its specific category. The plot is dense, deep and certainly makes it one of the best plot twist movies to watch.
In this plot, we follow a poor family where none of the members has a job. It's after their daughter starts teaching for a wealthy family that they devise a plan for each of them to enter the lives of the family in question.
Of course, there are also several films with plot twist from Netflix that are worth checking out, such as Fracture and Island of Fear, but in general, these are the ones with the best plot twists.
